You Know What, Viola Davis?

I’ll admit it. I still haven’t seen The Help. I couldn’t get through Ender’s Game. But you were cool in that terrible Beautiful Creatures movie. Look, what I’m trying to say is I don’t know much of your filmography, but dammit I want to become your super fan.

Not only am I geeking out over a black woman being the star of another HIT TV show, but I’m loving the fact that you’re a dark skinned woman. You’re reasserting all those feels I’ve been having for Lupita Nyong’o since she blew up. Women of my shade ARE beautiful and talented and can be loved by many.

I LIIIIIVE for you. No I don’t. But I would. Do you need a personal assistant? Girl, I’ll be perfect. When you’re down, I’ll have sweet and spicy barbecue ribs ready to cheer you up. I’ll know those days you’ll be needing to restock on your Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque and look out for those sales because it doesn’t matter how wealthy you are, you’ll still appreciate a deal.

You look like you’re a #4 hair color, do you need a new wig? I GOT YOU. Feeling sassy? Shoot, I’ll get you one with #33 highlights. What would you do for Klondike bar? Call me! I’ll gather every magazine and newspaper that publishes some idiotic article about how a “less classically beautiful” woman can’t carry a successful show and after we’re done laughing at the absurdity of it all, we’ll burn them bonfire style while sipping on glasses on Pinot Noir. I don’t think you understand how much fun we could have!

What I’m trying to say is I hope you’re on my TV screen for years to come. Thank you Shonda Rhimes (never thought I’d be saying this) for bringing Annalise Keating into my life. Annalise Keating makes me feel good to be in my skin. People fear her and respect her and I want that kind of power! Men practically fall at her feet, weeping to be touched by slivers of her beautiful light. Women want to grow up to be her. She’s 100% pure no B.S. even when she’s hurting on the inside like a mere mortal, what grace.

I digress for a moment to say how much I appreciate complex female characters on my TV screen. Like hey, women are no longer defined by the men and children in their lives, but they’re able to exist on their own and remain likable. They can be sexy and strong and incredibly candid to the point of rudeness and they still maintain affection. That’s awesome! Why did it take this long? Doesn’t matter, let’s rejoice that it’s happening and keep supporting writing like this! DO IT.

(At the time of this publishing, I hadn’t seen the second episode of How to Get Away With Murder, so if anything I’ve referenced doesn’t coincide with where the show is going, shush!)
